Technique tips that match each of the traditional instruments of Arabic music, along with guidance on staging for performance, focus, framing, and eye gaze, use of hands and arms, and body positioning, mind training and imagery, Breathwork for Performance, and developing an improvisation practice for yourself. Improvisation practice with live-band and recorded taqasim on different instruments, with and without rhythm, with juicy information on maqamat and styling. Plus full Oriental dance show performance by Ranya with 6-member live Arabic orchestra. Maqamat |
Maqamat DVD - coming fall 2010NERD ALERT! In-depth and practical musicality training for dancers, including studio work with live musicians (accordion, oud, violin, and riqq), using improvisational solo music, taqasim, as well as traditional songs and instrumental pieces, as a means of exploring the unique feeling and character of each of the primary eight maqamat (melodic modes) of Arabic music. This DVD program is geared towards dancers who really want to go deeper into feeling the melodic side of dance performance, as well as towards musicians who are learning Arabic music and want a better sense of the maqamat or who are working on playing for Oriental dancers. The program includes taqasim by each instrument with and without rhythm, in each of the eight maqamat, with practice options to stay with a single maqam or a single instrument so you can "drill" either from an instrument perspective or from a maqam perspective. Footage includes dancer view and musicians view, so you can focus on the instruments or on the dance moves, whatever inspires you to practice in the moment. PLEASE NOTE: Ranya is producing this DVD with her new production company, and it is currently (late July) in the early stages of editing. Styling that recalls "Golden Age" dance, delicate, lyrical, playful, with attention to feeling as expressed through Arabic melodies and rhythms. Inspired by the dancing of the black-and-white era movie star dancers of Egyptian cinema. Technique and steps material (including combination drills and improvisational practice flows) for beginners through advanced dancers—something for everyone! Attention to what gives dance a "classical" look as opposed to a more "modern" look. Also will include breakdown of musical nuances, so you can follow what you are hearing with even more feeling and depth. PLEASE NOTE: Ranya will be producing this DVD with her new production company, to be filmed in fall 2010.
